Great news for older webOS devices users. The newly announced HP webOS 2.0 has been confirmed to be available for older webOS devices including Palm Pre, Palm Pre Plus, Palm Pixi and Palm Pixi Plus. It’s said that the update will be “available in the coming months”. So hopefully it’s not so long.

Despite this great news, we also have to say sorry to Palm Pixi’s users knowing that the Adobe Flash support won’t be available for Pixi or Pixi Plus. At least that’s what we can see from the Palm Pre 2 Press release few days ago.

(6) The Adobe Flash Player 10.1 Beta is compatible only with Palm Pre devices; not compatible with Pixi or Pixi Plus.

Well this could be a little disapointment but still a good news though.

Today Palm App Catalog welcomes some new applications. Among those apps Palm highlighted the popular restaurant reservation service OpenTable for Palm webOS. This application helps you to find restaurants with availability near your current location and integrate it automatically into your calendar. This application is free and available to download from the Palm App Catalog.

Another new application in the App Catalog are Fliq Bookmarks, a helpful utility from Mark/Space that works with The Missing Sync for Palm Pre to transfer Safari Bookmarks from your desktop to your Palm Pre. This app currently available for Mac but the PC version is coming soon. Anyway, it’s good to see more apps coming to the Palm App Catalog.

Palm just released the webOS 1.1 with several additions, fixes and changes to the previous version Palm webOS 1.0.4. Among those changes Palm highlighted the enhanced support for Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) Policies including the PIN/Password Required, Inactivity timeout, Remote Wipe, improved certificate handling, and more.

In addition to the mentioned above there are also many feature changes to the existing applications below:

Default reminder interval for calendar accounts on your phone are 15 minutes for timed events and one day for all-day events

The phone application opens more quickly when launched from the camera

Enhanced support for time zones in Clock

Synchronization between friends added or deleted on your Facebook and the Facebook account in Contacts on the phone now works correctly as well as the Google contact

Improvements in Messaging features including the emoticons, the time format, etc

Improved functionality of person reminders

For the complete list of the new features and changes of the Palm webOS 1.1 you may take a look at the release notes at www.palm.com/webos-pre-sprint-en. And one more, in the webOS 1.1 Palm has resolved the issue preventing media sync from working with latest version of iTunes 8.2.1 so now you can have seamless access to your music, photos and videos through iTunes again.

If you are Palm Pre owner, Palm provides system updates wirelessly to webOS phones which are released periodically and are intended to increase stability, improve the user experience. It means all these updates will be delivered automatically to your phone. However the manual updates is also possible in case you missed the automatic updates. For detail instructions about the updates you may check this step-by-step document.

I know this is not the first time the GSM version of Palm Pre spotted somewhere. But this time the source came with more pictures including the hands on video and picture comparison with HTC Magic and Palm Centro. The one that is seen on this site is the experimental version from Palm and not for sale.According to the source, the GSM version of Palm Pre mostly the same with the CDMA version. But so far there’s no official info yet from Palm about the availability of the Palm Pre GSM version.

Just less than two weeks after the launch of the Palm Pre device, the Palm Pre application store, Palm Application Catalog has recorded more than 660,000 downloads until June 17th, incredible. It’s huge considering there are only 18 applications on the catalog and just been risen to 30 last week, the rest of them are still in beta versions.

So what actually happened on this phenomenon? In my personal opinion, people could be suffered to find applications for their Palm Pre so they will download anything exist on the catalog including those beta versions. Another thing, developers could be curious about the kind of applications for Palm Pre so they will download it just to test it and develop their own.

Anyway, Palm must have done something on this and the webOS SDK will be released for public at the end of this summer. So, hopefully more applications will come and it means a warning back to Apple Application Store.

We know that the Palm Pre can sync with the current version of iTunes. This could be good and bad both for the companies Palm and Apple or also the Palm Pre owners. From Apple perspective, the Palm Pre users somehow could probably blame them if there’s something problem with their Palm Pre iTunes sync. And for Palm as a company and the Pre owners, it’s good to have this feature as a bonus. Or is it just the way of Palm to say to Apple to acquire them? Maybe!

And on Tuesday, June 16, Apple posted a warning about the Palm Pre sync on iTunes. It didn’t mentioned Palm Pre specifically, but it’s obvious that the “third-party” means Palm Pre. Or Apple may be think that there could be more vendor will do the same thing. See the warning below:

iTunes: About unsupported third-party digital media players

Summary

This article is about iTunes and unsupported third-party digital media players.

Apple designs the hardware and software to provide seamless integration of the iPhone and iPod with iTunes, the iTunes Store, and tens of thousands of apps on the App Store. Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.

And what Palm said about this warning? John Paczkowski from Digital Daily reported the Palm spokeperson Lynn Fox response to Apple’s warning:

Palm’s media sync works with the current version of iTunes. If Apple chooses to disable media sync in a future version of iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience. However, people will have options. They can stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre, they can transfer the music via USB, and there are other third-party applications we could consider.

So what do you think? Should Apple remove the Palm Pre from iTunes or better Apple start to think to buy Palm.

First of all, congratulations to Palm for the launch of the Palm Pre on June 6th, just few days ago. We’ve seen the excitement of so many people waiting for the phone and finally they got what they want. But then, now what? What you should do then after playing around with your Pre. You have to get something more than just a phone, that is the applications. But hey, where the applications gone? Even Handango, one of the biggest application store for mobile device doesn’t have any apps yet for the Palm Pre.

Yeah, Palm probably didn’t consider this situation or they did but nothing they can do since it’s not that easy to build system like Apple Application Store, Android Market or BlackBerry Application World. Even the giant software company like Microsoft needs so long time to have their own. At the end Palm just hand it over to developers to built applications for the Palm Pre.

And now, i’m sure all people who have bought the Palm Pre now thinking about the same situation. They are probably frustrating to find applications for their Pre. And what Palm do for this? I don’t know. Probably they are thinking the same thing. That’s why today they announces some applications for Palm Pre although not too many. So let’s see what Palm can do to speed up the application development for the Palm Pre.
