Just like another new platforms, great device will not automatically be a good solution like what’s happened when Palm launched the Pre to the market while the applications were not ready yet. The same case now happens to the newly launched the Nokia N900 which is running on Maemo 5 software. Due to API changes dramatically in Maemo 5 from the previous Maemo platform, most applications built for the previous version will not automatically compatible to the Maemo 5. Now there’s a big question, where to get the applications for the N900?

In these videos below, Peter Schnaider, Head of Marketing of Maemo Devices, talked about this issue during the Nokia World Event last week. In summary, Nokia doesn’t worry about the applications since the Maemo 5 which is based on Linux is an open source platform and there are many strong open source communities that will work on those applications.

During the Nokia World 09 event last week, Nokia Conversation team conducted kind of popularity contest among those products announced at the event. And as the result, the Nokia N900 voted as the most favorite product followed by the Nokia Booklet 3G at the second place and the new Nokia X6 at the third place. One thing that’s interesting is that the Nokia N97 that was became a hot issues few weeks ago is only voted at the fourth place with 6% of vote.

This result is based on 2,670 votes received. The Nokia’s debut Linux-based Maemo 5 device N900 earned 1,804 votes or 68% compared to 15% for the mini laptop PC Nokia Booklet 3G at the second place and 11% for the Nokia X6 at the third place. Below is the complete chart of the result.

I posted few pictures of the Nokia Rover N900 aka RX-51 few days ago including the specs. But this time Eldar Murtazin from Mobile-review just published a comprehensive report or i would say a quick review about the phone with huge number of pictures cover every single detail of the phone both hardware and software. It’s strongly recommended to read. But the one that’s shown on this report is a prototype and not the final version so there could be some changes compared to the final product later.

Nokia N900 is the upcoming Maemo 5 smartphone from Nokia. Here’s the highlight of the report that were not covered by our previous post for your convenient:

Physically the phone features a slide out full QWERTY keyboard

MicroSD card slot is hidden under the rear lid supports up to 32GB

The battery is 1320 mAh

There’s a connector microUSB supports charging of the cable and also output to TV

About the Maemo, the phone is significantly different with Nokia N97 and much more like iPhone with a lot of visual effects, smooth transitions, a good response for the touch-sreen. However the User Interface somehow different with iPhone and more looks like HTC products.

The web browser supports Flash video as well as applets

And finally the phone is expected to hit the market at the end of 2009 with a price of 550 euro.
