Bug fixes

This update includes the following new features:

• Photos – this features now includes a camera button in the toolbar and also improvement on the image preview makes uploading photos is easier than ever. You can now choose photo from your library or take a new picture quickly.
• Follow your friends – this feature enables you to find which of your friend on Twitter that have chosen to be discoverable through the contacts on your phone.
• Local trends – see trends based on your location
• Shorten links – the app now includes an automatic shorten links feature which will automatically shorten the link you want to share.
• Tweet box design – The “New Tweet” screen is redesigned which cleaner and simpler.
• Autocomplete – this feature enables you to better type the Twitter username which will auto-complete @username and hash-tags when you type it.
• Direct messages – The new Direct Message conversation views will helps you better keep track of messages.

This update is only available for iPhone and iPad at the moment. And there’s even one new feature specific for iPhone called the Quick Bar that lets you quickly see trends at the top of your timeline which you can swipe to the left or right to see additional trends.

For the iPhone, it’s no surprise that Angry Birds is on the top list of paid apps while Facebook is on the top free apps. While MLB.com At Bat 2010 is choosed as the top grossing apps. And for the iPad, Pages is on the top of paid apps and top grossing apps. while iBooks which is one of the features iPad users use is put on the top free apps.

The interesting thing is that the iOS 4.2 was supposed to be due to release on Tuesday, November 2. But then it’s been delayed due to bug to display Japanese characters. And seems like the iOS 4.2 is now ready and coming soon.

Well, some of you probably know that in the last few weeks there were couple of issues in iOS 4 including the security issues which enable you to make a call from a locked iPhone. This issue will be fixed on iOS 4.2. And of course the most important thing for iPhone 3G users is that the iOS 4.2 is said to bring much more speed improvements to the iPhone 3G. So let’s wait and see what benefit the iOS 4.2 will bring.

One of the exclusive app demoed during the launch of the iPhone 4 was the iMovie for iPhone. The app is now available for purchase from iTunes App Store for $4.99 as promised.  This app is compatible for iOS 4 or later only which means not for lower OS version. However the iMovie for iPhone app is not available for all countries, at least at this moment. The only confirmed app store so far is for US, i don’t know for other countries.

iPhone iOS4 firmware was released officially on June 21st. It’s compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G. You can upgrade your existing iPhone whatever is the OS version to the iOS4. When you connecting your iPhone to iTunes it will automatically detect the update and offer you to upgrade it. The question is, are you really need to do it now or should you have to wait? The following notes probably will help you to make your decision.

Features – Apple claims there are more than 100 new features come with the iOS4. However not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking which is probably the most wanted feature of iPhone is available only with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. Read the iPhone iOS4 new features.

Performance – I have done the iOS4 upgrade on my iPhone 3G and restore all my apps and backup back to the iPhone. However, after playing around with the OS i just feel that my iPhone is now slower and less responsive. I had iPhone OS 3.1.3 before and there was no performance issue. Correct me if i’m wrong or if you have different experience after upgrading your iPhone.

Space – The iOS4 consumes more spaces compared to the previous iPhone OS 3.1.3 although not significant. I’m not the iPhone expert so i’m not sure how exactly it is but looking at the firmware source file, the iOS 4 is around 299 MB while the iPhone OS 3.1.3 is around 233 MB.

Apps Compatibility – I have found one app on my iPone so far which is not compatible with the iOS4. The problem is i use this app regularly. I checked to the App Store and according to the info, this app is only tested up to iPhone OS 3 but no info and no update yet for the iOS4. When you plan to upgrade your iPhone to iOS4 you better make sure that all your critical apps already compatible with iOS4.

iPhone Jailbreak – Some of you probably use the jailbroken iPhones. The iOS4 update upgrades the baseband to 05.13.04. In this case you probably need to wait for some times until the iOS4 compatible jailbreaking tools available unless you will loose your jailbreak. What i know so far, the compatible tools available are RedSn0w 0.9.5 b5-3 for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G, and Pwnage Tool 4.0 for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

iPhone Unlock – If you rely on iPhone unlock such as if you use iPhone with no specific carriers contract you probably need to be careful before deciding to upgrade to iOS4. Indeed you can jailbreak and unlock it when there’s tool available. But based on my experience, jailbreaking and unlocking process is somehow tricky and risky. Unless you are really confident to to that, i suggest to let it be done by the experts.

Well, we don’t always need to go for the new technologies when there’s one come. Besides it costs you times and efforts to upgrade, it’s also risky but at the end you don’t really need it. I personally upgraded my iPhone 3G to iOS4 just for fun since i don’t really have any critical things to risk inside my iPhone even if the worst things happened.

iTunes 9.2 is out and you can download it from Apple website or update directly from your current iTunes software. From the list of new features of iTunes 9.2, it’s obvious that the updates are intended to support iPhone 4 with iOS4 especially the iBooks for iPhone such as sync and read books with iBooks and organize and sync PDF documents as books. With the iTunes 9.2 out, we can hope that the iOS4 will soon also distributed.

iTunes LP – with this feature you can dive into animated lyrics and liner notes, watch performance videos, view artist and band photos and enjoy other bonus while listening to your favorite songs.

Home Sharing – with this feature you can browse the iTunes libraries of up to five authorized computers in your house. Then you can import what you like and automatically add new purchases made on any of the computers to your own library.

Genius Mixes – this new feature searches your iTunes library, finds songs that go great together, and creates multiple mixes you’ll love.

Besides with the iTunes Extras you can watch interviews and trailers, view photos and more when buying movies from the iTunes Store. And the iTunes 9 also gives you more flexible ways to sync your media from your computer to your iPhone or iPod makes you easier to organize all the apps.

And on Tuesday, June 16, Apple posted a warning about the Palm Pre sync on iTunes. It didn’t mentioned Palm Pre specifically, but it’s obvious that the “third-party” means Palm Pre. Or Apple may be think that there could be more vendor will do the same thing. See the warning below:

iTunes: About unsupported third-party digital media players

This article is about iTunes and unsupported third-party digital media players.

Apple designs the hardware and software to provide seamless integration of the iPhone and iPod with iTunes, the iTunes Store, and tens of thousands of apps on the App Store. Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.

And what Palm said about this warning? John Paczkowski from Digital Daily reported the Palm spokeperson Lynn Fox response to Apple’s warning:

Palm’s media sync works with the current version of iTunes. If Apple chooses to disable media sync in a future version of iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience. However, people will have options. They can stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre, they can transfer the music via USB, and there are other third-party applications we could consider.

So what do you think? Should Apple remove the Palm Pre from iTunes or better Apple start to think to buy Palm.

Apple on Monday released the iTunes 8.2 and now available to download via Apple website. This update version released with support for iPhone or iPod Touch with the iPhone 3.0 OS Software Update which will be released in the next few weeks.

According to the software release notes, The iTunes 8.2 which is available for Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later, Mac OS X Server v10.4.10 or later, Windows Vista, XP SP2 or later, also includes many accessibility improvements and bug fixes.
