Here you go, the Android 1.6 is not far away. According to the Android team, the first device to run with Android 1.6 will be available as early as October. And today, the team announced that the Android 1.6 SDK which is based on the Donut branch from the Android Open Source Project is now available to download.

There are a number of new features and technologies come with the Android 1.6 including frame-work level support for additional screen sizes and resolutions like QVGA and WVGA, new telephony APIs to support CDMA, gestures APIs, a text-to-speech engine, and the ability to integrate with Quick Search Box. You can find the details about this here.

The Android 1.6 SDK requires a new version of Android Development Tools (ADT). Besides the SDK also provide tools to enable you to download updates and additional components like new add-ons or platforms. It’s also said that the applications written for older version of Android will continue to run on devices with Android 1.6.

Check a video of the Android 1.6 highlights below:

Now i guess people are speculating about the new devices running with the Android 1.6. We don’t know yet, but i guess devices that will be announced after October or at least close to October will be likely to run the Android 1.6. One of that i think is the next Motorola Android phone that will be announced in the next few weeks. So we’ll see.

Just few days ago the Android developers team announced some updates to the Android Market. The New Android Market, that’s what they called it will include some new features to support the upcoming Android 1.6 that will improve the overall experience for users. Among those changes are the option for developers to submit screenshots, promotional icons and descriptions in addition to the application it self. Besides, the Android developer team also added four new sub-categories for applications: sports, health, themes, and comics.

Looking at the video above, it clearly shows the new features where developers can added two screenshots of the application. However according to an info on Phandroid, currently the screenshots image are only available on the market.android.com website and will not show on the device. So seems like the New Android Market is not yet 100% ready to launch all of the new features and the Android developer team must be working very hard on this. We’ll see!

Google will release two version of Android this year: Donut (Android 1.6) and Enclair (Android 2.0). The third version is code-named Flan. There will be also the fourt version as said by Andy Rubin, Google’s top Android executive recently in an interview talks about the future of Android. One of the topic discussed is about the specific functions in Donut and Eclair which said that they will take advantage of the most powerful processors on the market for features like 3D gaming.

As we know that the fastest processors in the market right now is 1GHz processor built Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Platform chipset products QSD8250. This is the one that will come with the Sony Ericsson Xperia X3 Rachael which will run on Android OS. Looking at the Donut’s features been discussed recently, it seems that this 3D gaming feature is not included. So Andy Rubin probably means that for the Eclair or Flan or even the fourth version. Based on this fact, the upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia X3 is likely to ship with the Eclair (Android 2.0) or the third version Flan.
