With the launch of many smartphones with dual-core processor recently, you probably think that we’re entering a new smartphone era with dual-core processor as the main feature. It’s absolutely true, but that’s not stop there. A Tegra roadmap from NVIDIA recently reveals what the chipmaker plans for the next few years. And surprisingly, NVIDIA is now working on quad-core processor which is scheduled coming to Android tablet in August this year.
According to the article i posted before, a benchmark test shows that the TI OMAP4 with dual-core dual-channel used by LG Optimus 3D performs better than the Tegra 2. But soon it will change by the time this “Tegra 3″ launched. Look at the Tegra roadmap on the picture below.
As you can see, using Tegra 2 as a baseline, this next generation of Tegra codenamed “Kal-El” which is scheduled for 2011 will deliver upto 5x performance compared to Tegra 2. While in 2012, NVIDIA expects to see “WAYNE” Tegra 4 which brings 10x faster performance. Still not enough? In 2013 “LOGAN” Tegra 5 will come with 50x faster followed by “Stark” Tegra 6 in 2014 with 100x faster performance.
Back to the “Kal-El”, this quad-core is claimed to have 5x faster performance but will consume less power than dual-core Tegra 2. And interestingly, a benchmark test of this new processor shows a better performance compared to the existing Intel Core2Duo which is used by laptops nowadays.
Another interesting thing is probably to see how the operating system supports this quad-core processor. If NVIDIA claims that this quad-core processor will come to Android tablet this year, it means the Android it self also has to be updated to support this hardware before that time. So, that’s for NVIDIA Tegra. Now, what others manufacturers will say about this?
