Google Launches Mobile Device Management for Android

Google today launches the Mobile Device Management solution for Android devices similar to the Microsoft Mobile Device Manager. The different is you don’t need to deploy dedicated servers. With this new administrative controls, you can manage devices in the Google Apps environment. However Google didn’t specifically mention whether this solution is also applicable for other mobile devices.

As you know that the Google Apps now supports most of mobile platforms including BlackBerry, iPhone, Nokia S60, Windows Mobile and of course Android. But since many Android devices feature tight integration with Google Apps such as Gmail, Google Talk, Google Calendar and mobile access to Google Docs, it’s likely that Google will be easier to enforce this solution to Android devices.

However, seems like this solution currently can be used for devices running Android 2.2 only. The interesting thing about this solution is the ability for the Administrator to give access to their corporate information as well as enforcing policies. These include:

  • Remotely wipe all data from lost or stolen mobile devices
  • Lock idle devices after a period of inactivity
  • Require a device password on each phone
  • Set minimum lengths for more secure passwords
  • Require passwords to include letters and numbers

To be able to enforce policies to a device, you need to installed the Google Apps Devices Policy application that will be available from Android Market in the next few days. Well, i don’t know how it works exactly but that’s a good solution for corporates.
