A rumor said that Apple is working on the CDMA iPhone 4 due to large CDMA chipsets orders from Qualcomm. The phone is expected to release sometimes in January 2011. Currently the phone is at the EVT stage (engineering verification test) before the DVT stage (device verification test).
However, John Gruber, the person behind this info said that none of this is a sure thing including the carriers that will offer the phone. The CDMA iPhone could have nothing to do with Verizon specifically just like what previously rumored. Instead, the phone could be for Sprint, or for various international CDMA carriers.
Looking at the expected release date, CES 2011 could be the event where the CDMA iPhone will be announced as the Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg will deliver the opening keynote. If all these are true, it means AT&T iPhone exclusivity will be over while Verizon will start a new era.
But there are two interesting questions. First, is Verizon really want to bring in a new brand while they are now known for the Motorola Droid and enjoying great success with this phone. The second probably, is the CDMA iPhone 4 will fix the antenna problem? It’s interesting to wait, isn’t it?
