In the last few days there has been rumors about the next successor of the Android Gingerbread codenamed “Honeycomb” which is probably will be the Android 3.1 or 3.2. Reportedly the Android Honeycomb is scheduled for 2011 launch. At the first time i heard it i didn’t really interested but as the rumors becomes big, i took sometimes to learn about that. And this is what i found.
It’s not a secret that Google always use the names of sweets or cake for it’s Android OS. Let’s take a look of the history of the Google Android OS:
C: Cupcake 1.5 (released on February 9, 2009)
D: Donut 1.6 (released on September 15, 2009)
E: Eclair 2.0/2.1 (released on October 26, 2009)
F: Froyo 2.2 (released on May 20, 2010)
G: Gingerbread 3.0 (tentatively scheduled for Q4 2010 launch)
H: ?? Honeycomb as being rumored (scheduled for 2011)
The interesting aspect that always changed from each versions is the “User Interface” where the UI revamped only from version 1.x to 2.x and then to 3.x. Now the question is whether the Android Honeycomb will be the Android 3.x or 4.x.
I tried to search for the relation between “Gingerbread” and “Honeycomb”. And here’s what i found (source: Wikipedia):
Gingerbread is a term used to describe a variety of sweet food products, which can range from a soft cake to something close to a ginger biscuit. What they have in common are the predominant flavors of ginger and a tendency to use honey or molasses (treacle) rather than just sugar.
So, you can see that “honey” is there. But that’s not just the only one. Here’s another fact:
Originally, the term gingerbread (from Latin zingiber via Old French gingebras) referred to preserved ginger. It then referred to a confection made with honey and spices.
Well, looking at these two facts it’s really possible that “Honeycomb” will be used for the name of the next Android OS. And from the fact that honey is still part of Gingerbread means that the Android Honeycomb is likely to be the Android 3.x (3.1 or 3.2).
Interesting, isn’t it? No one can confirmed about this, not even Google of course. But Techradar reported that this name has been confirmed by multiple sources. So it’s still far away since the Android Gingerbread it self is not yet released.
